Abstract

Entrepreneurial orientation and environmental adaptability have been widely
recognized as important determinants of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise
(MSME) performance. However, previous empirical studies have reported
inconsistent findings regarding the structural relationships among
entrepreneurial orientation, environmental adaptability, business model
innovation, and business performance. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize
empirical evidence and develop a conceptual framework explaining the
mediating role of business model innovation in the relationship between
entrepreneurial orientation, environmental adaptability, and MSME business
performance. This study employed a quantitative literature review approach by
systematically reviewing empirical studies published between 2015 and 2026,
with a primary emphasis on research applying Structural Equation Modeling–
Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The findings reveal that entrepreneurial
orientation and environmental adaptability significantly promote business model
innovation, which subsequently enhances MSME business performance.
Business model innovation functions as a strategic mechanism that transforms
entrepreneurial capabilities into sustainable competitive performance. The study
integrates Entrepreneurial Orientation Theory, Dynamic Capability Theory, and
the Resource-Based View (RBV) to provide a comprehensive theoretical
explanation of the relationships among the variables. Practically, the findings
highlight the importance of strengthening entrepreneurial capabilities, adaptive
capacity, and business model innovation to improve the long-term
competitiveness and sustainability of MSMEs.
